NOTE FROM MANAGING DIRECTOR
Last month, I had the opportunity to spend some time with owners relocating both our 68 Sports Motor Yacht and our Sydney Based 6000 Sport Yacht to the Whitsundays. It was a pleasure to see our owners observe the capability and power of their exceptional Riviera vessel during the cruises up north.
Boating can be an escape for many, to unwind and relax but Dr. Wallace Nichols suggests boating also has significant physiological and psychological benefits for us! A regular comment that we hear from our clients after they have been on relocation trips is that they feel completely replenished, and almost like they’ve been away longer than they actually have. There is something about being out on the open water, words can’t describe it, it is simply incredible.
Once again, we have put together our Boating Partnerships food guide sharing our favorite recipes to impress your guests.
Another way to impress your guests is by sharing your boating knowledge through our Refresh Your Knowledge section. Take a step back through history, understanding the meaning of Port and Starboard and where they originated from.

PHYSIOLOGICAL AND PSYCHOLOGICAL BENEFITS OF BOATING
Dr Wallace Nichols, award-winning marine biologist, suggests that getting out on your boat has significant physiological and psychological benefits.
His research advocates that there are notable cognitive, emotional, psychological, social, physical, and spiritual benefits to be derived from contact with clean waters and oceans. His best selling book, Blue Mind, explores the surprising science that shows how being near, on or under water can make you happier, healthier, more connected and better at what you do.
In a modern world where our lives tend to be over-connected and over-stimulated, boating is the perfect escape to unwind and relax. Dr Nichols has discovered that the sight and sound of water encourages wellness, by lowering the stress hormone cortisol and increases the feel-good hormones serotonin, dopamine, and oxytocin.
His research has found that the benefits of being around water increases an overall sense of well-being and happiness, a lower heart and breathing rate as well as boosts creativity. Therefore not only is it enjoyable to be out on the water with family and friends, but the side effects of boating are extremely beneficial to our lifestyle.

BOATING PARTNERSHIPS FOOD GUIDE
Boating Partnerships food guide allows you to be inspired by different ideas to impress your guests. This issue we want to share with you another one of our favorite meals that you can serve to your guests and family that we know they will enjoy.
Homemade Sushi
Ingredients
ONE ORGANIC Sushi Nori Premium Roasted Organic Seaweed
1/4 cup seasoned rice vinegar (we recommend - Marukan)
1.5 cups sushi rice (we recommend - Nishiki)
Soy sauce, wasabi, pickled ginger
Desired fillings - Ours include avocado, chicken, salmon, cucumber.
Please note a bamboo sushi matt is also required - these can be purchased from most supermarkets.
Method
For 1.5 cups of rice, add 1/4 cup of rice vinegar to the rice. Rice can be pre-cooked in a rice cooker or on the stove on your Riviera.
Gently toss the rice around to further distribute the rice vinegar, trying not to mash or flatten the rice.
Spread the seaweed with a layer of prepared sushi rice and flatten gently with a rice paddle or hands, but do not smash the rice. Place your desired filling ingredients on top of the rice.
Roll it up tightly, using a bamboo mat or your hands. Have a bowl of water handy to smooth down the ends of the seaweed, keeping the roll together.
Then use a sharp knife to cut the sushi roll into pieces.
Now you’re ready to eat the rolls! Enjoy with some soy sauce, pickled ginger, and wasabi, as desired!
If you would like to order fresh and ready seafood for your sushi masterpieces please feel free to contact Danielle, our concierge manager.

THE STORY BEHIND PORT AND STARBOARD
Ever wondered why the terms “Port” and “Starboard” are used to indicate the left and right sides of the vessel? Let’s look back in time to when these names were originated.
When boating first began before ships had rudders on their centerlines, boats were controlled using a steering oar.
A steering oar was an alteration of an oar usually attached in a vertical direction to one side of the vessel.
During this timeframe, the majority of the sailers were right-handed so the steering oar that once controlled the ship was placed over or through the right side of the stern.
Starboard
Most of the sailors previously called the right side of the boat the “Steering side” which soon became “starboard”.
The word “starboard is formed by combining two old English words stéor (meaning “steer”) and bord (meaning “the side of the boat”).
As the size of the boats grew so did the steering oar making it much easier to dock on the side opposite to the steering oar. This meant the boats used to dock with the left side of the boat facing the dock.
Port
The original name of the left side of the ship was not “port” but rather the old English word “Baecbord”. After “Baecbord” came “Ladderbord” meaning “Ladden” (meaning to load) and Bord meaning (ship side). This gave rise to the starboard rhyming word “larboard.”
Over time, larboard which was too easily confused with starboard was replaced with Port as this was the side that faced the port or the dock, allowing cargo to be loaded or released. This is how the terms “Port” and “Starboard” came into existence. Since “Port” and “Starboard” never changed sailers prefer to use these nautical terms instead of left and right.
RIVIERA NEWS
JUNE 25, 2021
Riviera attracts record interest in apprenticeship opportunities for 2022.
Riviera, Australia’s luxury motor yacht builder, hosted a record 330 people to an information evening and site tour of its state-of-the-art Gold Coast facility as part of the company’s apprenticeship recruitment drive for 2022.
The site tour, held annually by Riviera in collaboration with local schools and employment service providers, was attended by students, parents, teachers and industry liaison officers who were advised of the many marine industry career opportunities currently available at Riviera.
Riviera has significantly expanded its boatbuilding team over the past year by 30 per cent to more than 800 working on site.
This growth has been led by the global demand for Riviera motor yachts across the company’s 23-model range from 39 to 78 feet.
Riviera has added two new trades to its program for 2022, namely boilermaking and furniture finishing (French polishing), to take the total of trades available from seven to nine. Riviera also offers apprenticeships in polymer processing, marine craft construction, diesel fitting, cabinetmaking, timber and composites machining, upholstery and electrotechnology.
“We are looking to bring on apprentices across all the trades required to create luxury Riviera motor yachts, so we’re thrilled with the response to this year’s site tour,” said Riviera’s Safety and Training Manager Adam Houlahan.
“The level of inquiry for apprenticeship positions has been the strongest ever experienced by our team, and we hope to provide as much information as they need to make such an important decision.
“Riviera offers a highly awarded and respected training program for people seeking a career in the marine industry. With the growth of our team over the past year and the new opportunities we have available, we are looking forward to welcoming another significant number of apprentices to Riviera in 2022.”
Mitchell Ney, a student at Park Ridge High School south of Brisbane, was among the many first-time visitors to Riviera’s boatbuilding facility as part of the site tour. He was accompanied by his father Mark.
“It was an incredible place; Dad and I were blown away by the size of it all,” said Mitchell. “The detail going into building a boat is what struck me. It’s amazing how it all happens.”
