 NOTE FROM MANAGING DIRECTOR

As we welcome back normality, it has been exciting to see all our owners back on the water once again. We have had the pleasure of introducing the 5400 SMY to it’s new owners and look forward to the brand new 395 SUV arriving in the coming months.

This History of Sydney is an article that we introduce to you this month that will continue into the coming year. We hope this article allows you to understand your historical surroundings on a deeper level when out on your vessel. We hope you will share your wisdom with your friends and family. We have began with Fort Denison located in the center of Sydney Harbour. For many it’s just a brick building that you need to avoid, but you will soon learn the tales of its dark past.

As El Nina approaches it's the perfect time to prepare in the unlikely chance of getting stuck in a thunderstorm. Although Riviera builds in a degree of protection it is ideal for owners to understand the most suitable way to approach the situation. Below we have outlined our advice and tips that might just save your life!

THE HISTORY OF SYDNEY

Fort Denison

When cruising through Sydney Harbour, you may have noticed a stone building located in the center of the Harbour. Port Dension is a heritage-listed site, formerly known as a military site that was once under attack from a US-friendly fire in WW11. Denison has become the most complete Martello Tower in the world and many people from all over the world come to view this popular Sydney attraction.

Fort Denison’s Dark Past

Originally named Mat-te-wan-ye by the local indigenous population, the Island then became Rock Island by Governor Arthur Phillip when the British Colonised in 1788. The island then took on a more sinister name due to its cruel nature. Convict, Thomas Hill was sentenced to a week in iron chains with nothing but bread and water. Due to his mal-nourishment the name was then changed to Pinchgut Island.

Fort Denison provides guided tours through the museum, shares an impressive canon gun powder store as well as the winding staircase in Australia’s only Martello Tower. When you are done exploring, the cafe is a great place for a quick snack or delicious lunch and is also available for private evening functions. Currently closed for construction, however, fort Denison is the perfect place to see the impressive Sydney at a 360-degree view.

WHAT TO DO IN A LIGHTNING STORM?

Count the seconds between the flash of lightning and clap of thunder,

then divide by 5: the result is the distance in miles from the storm.

A beautiful day out on the water can change dramatically. Storms are unpredictable, dangerous, and extremely powerful. If you can avoid using your boat, it is responsible to do so. This article hopes to provide you with advice if you are in the unfortunate event of a thunderstorm.

While Riviera can build in a degree of protection, it is important that owners are informed and prepared, ready to act in the event of a storm or actual lightning strike. Many boat owners believe having a motor means they can simply outrun the storm but this may just not be the case.

Short-term forecasts can actually be fairly good at predicting bigger storms, but small, localized storms might not be reported. This is when knowing how to read the weather yourself can come in handy.

If you find your vessel the only boat left on the water, there is a higher risk that the lightning may affect you. Lightning and boats do not mix. While manufacturers can build in a degree of protection, safety begins with boaters being informed and prepared to act in the event of a thunderstorm or actual strike.

Familiarise yourself with these techniques and strategies:

  • If you are out on the open water or too far from shore and shelter, it’s time to hunker down and ride it out.

  • Lightning seeks the highest point, and on the water, that’s the top of the boat. Make use of the enclosed cabins and stay away from metal objects, electrical outlets, and appliances (it’s a good idea to put your lifejacket on too).

  • Under no circumstances should the VHF radio be used during an electrical storm unless it’s an emergency (handhelds are OK).

  • Be careful not to grab two metal objects, like a metal steering wheel and metal railing — that can be a deadly spot to be if there’s a strike.

  • The storm will blow past or rain itself out in 20 to 30 minutes. It’s best to wait at least 30 minutes until the last clap of thunder to resume activities.

 BOATING PARTNERSHIPS FOOD GUIDE

Rice Paper Rolls

Rice paper rolls, paired with a tangy dipping sauce, are a much-loved staple of Vietnamese cuisine. Although they look impressive, they are surprisingly easy to make and are the ideal dish to serve on your Riviera for your family and guests. Also, as they’re made from rice starch, so they’re gluten free.

The useful thing about rice paper rolls is the ability to fill them with anything. If its left over chicken or salad from lunch, these ingredients are perfect for your roll. Another important inclusion is a range of fresh herbs, with Thai basil and mint being the most popular. While you can choose anything to include in your rice paper rolls, some popular fillings include:

Here are our personal favourite filling options:

  • Prawn and barbecued pork with cucumber, basil and mint

  • Barbecued chicken with Chinese cabbage, bean sprouts, mint and coriander

  • Roast beef with cucumber and mint

  • Chicken with lettuce mint and basil

  • Prawn, carrot, pea sprouts and mint

  • Julienned carrot, cucumber and capsicum with mint and basil

STEP-BY-STEP GUIDE TO MAKING A RICE PAPER ROLL

STEP 1

Soak the vermicelli noodles in just boiled water to soften, then rinse them in cold water to stop the cooking process. Drain well, then chop them into short lengths to make it easy to add to your rolls.

STEP 2

Place each of your fillings in separate bowls along the bench. Keep your bulkiest items, such as the cooked noodles, closest to you, with the herbs furthest away.

STEP 3

Pour boiling water into a shallow dish that is wide enough to take your dried rice paper. Working with one sheet of rice paper at a time, dip into the hot water for a few minutes to soften, then transfer to a plate covered with a damp tea towel.

STEP 4

Working with one sheet at a time, place some of each of the fillings in the centre of the rice paper, ensuring it is kept 10 cm from each end. Do not overfill or you could risk the rice paper splitting.

STEP 5

Bring the two ends of the rice paper over the filling, then roll up the sides to create a tight parcel. Repeat with remaining rice paper sheets.

WELCOMING BACK GARRY, THE BOATING BARISTA

A familiar face you may know is Gary White. 20 years out of retirement and he’s found a way to keep the locals happy. Garry cruises Sydney’s middle Harbour, driving into coves and alongside vessels supplying the locals with their favorite coffee. Garry will start his weekend at 7:30, loading his small boat with suppliers ready for the busy day ahead. Garry has come to know his customers and their coffee preferences over the last 20 years, which brings smiles to all the locals.

Garry’s little business may sound relaxing out on the water but he’s had his challenges. He’s had to manage many competitors and survived the accidental sinking of his boat by a customer.

From his former job being an agricultural economist and political consultant, his life has definitely altered. Only now he is serving former prime minister Paul Keating in a different sort of way…COFFEE

With restrictions easing, we can safely say we will be seeing a lot more of Garry White out on the water!

Knots for fenders

Have you ever wondered what the quickest and easiest way to tie up a fender is? In this month’s e-magazine, we are going to share with you some simple tricks to make your experience quick and easy.

Organising the fenders:

  1. Begin by orienting your fenders either horizontally or vertically. If your boat will be stationed next to another boat, by a dock, or by a seawall, you’ll want to tie the fenders on going vertically. If your boat will be next to pilings or posts, choose to tie them horizontally.

  2. Tie up your fenders in a low position. Tying them low will help keep them steady and prevent them from swinging around too much.

  3. Adjust the fenders according to what they’re lying against. When you’re holding the fender over the boat, position it so that it becomes a buffer between the boat and the dock or other structure. You should raise or lower the fenders depending on the height of what you’re protecting your boat from

  4. Pull the running end through the loop you've created. Once the line is half-way around the rail, you'll have created a loop. Pull the working end of the line underneath this loop, pulling the line tightly. The weight of the fender will pull down on the knot, keeping it tight and in place

  5. Use a half hitch knot as a simple alternative. To tie a half hitch knot, lay the line around the rail, bringing the end under the standing part of the line. Pull the end of the line up through the loop you just created. Pull it tightly to secure it.

    • You can repeat this process to create several half hitches, making your line even more secure.

    • Use half hitches if you're attaching the fenders to a lifeline
