 THE HISTORY OF SYDNEY

Q-Station-Manly-2019-28-scaled-e1597301466418.jpeg

For the remainder of the year, we will be looking into the history of Sydney Harbour. We’ll look to provide you with the historical relevance to some of Sydney’s most beautiful buildings, landmarks and artefacts, so as to allow you to be your own tour guides as you explore the picturesque coastline from the comfort of your own vessel. We hope that these articles will give you a greater appreciation of Sydney’s rich history.

Let’s draw our attention to the Quarantine Station within this issue, taking a step back into history!

Quarantine Station

Between the 1830s and 1980s, nearly 16,000 people experienced the Quarantine Station in North Head near Manly. Located in an impressive Sydney Harbour National Park, this landmark has an incredible history not known to many.

The Quarantine Station’s heritage buildings reflect a rich history, highlighting historical themes of gender, race and class. Thousands of carved sandstone engravings record the diverse cultural and social backgrounds as well as varying experiences of the quarantined passengers. For over 100 years it served as the gatekeeper between potentially sick immigrants, sick residents and the colony and country beyond. It was a place that allowed protection for the coastal cities from plague epidemics.

The Quarantine Station became a place with a compelling tale of survival where people either recovered from illness or never left. It can be said that the spirits of those that with lasted the quarantine process helped to shape our nation of today.

North Head is also a place of historical relevance. Some of the earliest contact and formative interaction between Aboriginal clans and the British colonialists occurred at this site. On 29th January 1788, Captain Hunter and Lieutenant Bradley landed on Quarantine Beach during an initial survey of Sydney Harbour just three days after the First Fleet arrived in Port Jackson.Today the site is listed on both State and Commonwealth heritage registers as an integral element of North Head and its Aboriginal, natural and cultural significance.

The original buildings are now operating 4.5-star accommodation, function spaces, fine dining at the Boilerhouse Restaurant and Bar and an interpretive exhibition in the Visitor Centre.

Next time you’re cruising past North Head make sure to take in the beauty of the National Park and pay your respects to the history of this land.

OWNER EXPERIENCE

A day out boating can look different for everyone and our clients use their boats for many different occasions. If it’s a day out with their family or friends, a weekend away with their loved one, or a quiet place for a business meeting or celebration, we wanted to learn more about our owner’s experiences on their Rivieras. In this issue, we talked to Jordi, part-owner of the 4800 SY ‘Lutana’. Jordi is one of our many owners that really gets it right! He and his family enjoy going out on their boat for many different occasions, it’s a place for them to escape the distractions and spend some quality family time in their own space. Jordi’s boating is a talented operation, utilizing all aspects of the boat’s appliances. We wanted to share with you a day out with Jordi!

Having experienced the boating lifestyle as your stewardess, I was lucky enough to be a part of the talented operation that you run. Firstly, tell us a bit about your boating experience and why your boat works so well for you?

My experience with boats includes rowing them (still water), sailing them, and now motoring them. I have been in the Lutana syndicate since its inception, and I enjoy the versatility and the freedom the boat gives me to explore Sydney Harbour, the coastline to Broken Bay, Pittwater, and the Hawkesbury.

What is your go-to lunch/dinner meal?

Personally, my go-to lunch on the boat is a Chargrill chicken together with lettuce mayonnaise, and avocado on a fresh baguette.

When planning a lunch day out boating, what are the things that you always consider?

My day on the boat usually starts at the fish markets around 7am visiting Vic’s Meats for their wagyu burger patties and their Martin’s Potato Burger Rolls (no relation), together with a few rashes of bacon and their Housemade Rub. The next stop is Claudio’s for a kilo and half of the Clarence River fresh green prawns, heads removed; a dozen of Sydney rock oysters, half a dozen Mornay and half a dozen Kilpatrick Oysters; Salmon and Tuna Sashimi, together with their Wasabi soy sauce mix. My wife throws together a couple of healthy green salads to compliment the day's feasting.

A secret to share in preparing the steaks is to soak them in Bicarbonate Soda and water for about 30 mins, rinse them off in fresh water and then apply the Housemade Rub. These days I use a large plastic bag and put the rub in, followed by the steak, seal the bag; shake it to ensure the meat is fully covered, and leave it to fester…... if you do it a few hours before you need them, all the better.

How do you find cooking meat on the barbecue?

The BBQ does a great job cooking a steak, burger patties; garlic green prawns, with a touch of cayenne pepper, olive oil and a pinch of salt, and of course the onions. In summer I usually have the swim platform lowered by 6 inches, so my feet are soothed by the cool ocean water while cooking.

What’s your favorite aspect of the kitchen?

My favorite aspect of the kitchen is the versatility of the Smeg Oven which can act as a convection oven or grill, can defrost, or just be a simple microwave.

Why do you like using a stewardess and skipper?

I use a steward and a skipper when I have friends and I’m entertaining. This allows me to kick back, relax and not have the responsibility of skippering and preparing the feast!

What would be a tip for other owners in regards to meal preparing or the perfect meal to cook on your boat?

We have a rough outline of a meal plan before we head off and supplement that as needed. I possibly over-cater the gin, beer & wine; but let’s face it, you would never want to run out.

When staying on the boat for more than one night, what does your food plan look like, do you stop off anywhere or prepare the boat for the weekend?

When we are staying overnight on the vessel, we usually have a rough outline of what we are eating that night. I also make sure we have a good selection of cheeses on board.

Hopefully Jordi has inspired you for your next trip out on your beautiful Riviera vessel!

HOW TO HANDLE FOG

Fog can be a big inconvenience for boaters, as it can be unexpected, extremely dangerous, and can lead to a surprising number of accidents each year. As a general rule, we suggest if the conditions are expected to be foggy, avoid using your vessel; but in other circumstances where that may not be possible, here are some tips to ensure safety until the weather clears.

Screen Shot 2021-08-18 at 11.21.06 am.png

  • Stay Alert - When the fog begins to appear over the water, it’s important to take bearings, log your course, and check your current speed. Stay at a low speed and pay attention to your GPS and radar, both providing an accurate bearing on your course. In foggy conditions, a boat is expected to sound out a 5-second horn blast or whistle every 60 seconds. By doing this you are alerting others of your position, thus ensuring a safer course and avoiding a possible accident occurring.

  • Ensure everyone on board is wearing a lifejacket and your navigation lights are on.

  • Allow your passengers to support you by being on the lookout

  • If at any point you are not confident, drop anchor and make a plan. Make sure to maintain your horn blast progression whilst keeping your navigation lights.

Keeping in mind a few of these tips will allow for a smooth and safe journey when out on your vessel.

RIVIERA NEWS

Creating a new flagship – the Riviera 78 Motor Yacht

When Riviera revealed designs for a new class of motor yacht in May this year, the company’s New Product Introduction team was already hard at work building the first 78 Motor Yacht.

Concepts and planning for this exceptional new motor yacht had begun in 2019 through detailed discussions with a number of highly experienced owners.

We met Riviera’s New Product Introduction (NPI) Manager Warren Maslen as the hull and deck of the first 78 Motor Yacht were being joined.

Warren’s primary role at Riviera is to develop and document the build process for every model to allow the boat builders, engineers, electricians, carpenters and many other specialists to facilitate the efficient and exacting build of every yacht.

“Attention to detail is the keystone of the Riviera team, and this is certainly exemplified in the new 78 Motor Yacht,” explained Warren.

Warren joined Riviera in 2007, initially working on fitting out Riviera Sport Yachts. After spending many years on the boatbuilding production line, Warren’s skills, experience, and passion for making highest quality was recognised and he was asked to join the NPI team. Very quickly he progressed to the leadership role.

Designing a flagship

Utilising sophisticated 3D computer-aided design technology, the Riviera design team worked on concepts for the 78 Motor Yacht in collaboration with international superyacht designer Luca Vallebona. Their combined passion for excellence saw the development of plans for a sophisticated yacht that would deliver a perfect combination of family cruising, entertaining and blue-water passage-making capabilities.

The 78 Motor Yacht will be offered with an enclosed or open bridge deck and includes accommodation for up to 10 adults in four luxurious staterooms and crew quarters.

The saloon and bridge decks both extend through to the stern of the yacht, offering multiple dining, entertaining and relaxing spaces for parties, family gatherings, or more quiet moments…

The 395 SUV has just begun the build process leaving owners along with our team very excited to take part in the journey. This experience allows our owners to visit Riviera Australia's 14-hectare site and watch as they handcraft these stunning and endearing luxury motor yachts. Not only is this a fascinating experience learning about how they are manufactured, but our owners are also involved in building their dream boat - with their fellow owners of course!

The build process is broken up into 9 different steps with the 395 SUV currently in its first stages of Engineering.

Engineering - The Engineering Stage refers to the assembling of the engine room. Components that need to be installed include gyro stabiliser, water maker, fuel system, batteries, water tanks, water pumps, generator, engines, and drives.

Keep an eye out for the next issue as we look to update you on the latest of this exciting build.
